Across the Decades: AACA Meeting Brings Together Generations of Car Love

Photo of Sebastiano and Art

The recent meeting of the Fort Lauderdale Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) wasn’t your typical gathering of car enthusiasts. It was a heartwarming collision of eras, where a spark of passion for classic cars bridged a remarkable 74-year age gap.

At one end of the spectrum, we have Sebastiano, a enthusiastic 19-year-old, the youngest member of the club. At the other end, sits Art, a seasoned veteran with 93 years under his belt and a lifetime of car knowledge. Despite the decades separating them, both share a deep love for the history and beauty of classic automobiles.

One can only imagine the stories exchanged at this meeting. Perhaps Art regaled Sebastiano with tales of cruising in his first car, a time when gas was cheap and chrome gleamed brighter. Maybe Sebastiano, with his digital-native perspective, offered fresh insights on the future of car restoration.

This chance encounter perfectly embodies the spirit of the AACA. It’s a place where age becomes irrelevant, united by a common thread – the unwavering appreciation for the craftsmanship and timeless design of classic cars. The meeting wasn’t just about admiring vehicles; it was about the stories they hold, the memories they evoke, and the connections they forge across generations.

This heartwarming story is a reminder that passion for classic cars transcends age. It’s a love that endures, reminding us that the joy of cruising in a bygone era can unite young and old alike.

YATC Class of 2024

This inspiring talk at our February meeting by Terry Routley and Charles Whitehouse, representatives from the Youth Automotive Training Center (YATC) explained how this local organization is empowering young people, ages 16-21, through hands-on automotive training, academic support, and life skills development.

Terry and Charles along with our own member, Sabastino Traina, who is a student there, shared insights into YATC’s mission and the positive impact this organization has on young adults in our community. We learned how they equip students with valuable skills and knowledge, preparing them for successful careers and fulfilling lives.

This was a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of YATC’s work and the potential it holds for shaping the future of their students. We were inspired and learned how this organization gives personalized attention to help develop vital life skills, academic skills, automotive skills and a promosing future to to local youth.

On a sunny Florida day in November, over 90 car owners and their vehicles participated in the St. Colman Car Show, a fundraiser for the Honor Flight Network. Despite the slightly warm weather, many spectators came out to enjoy the show and support the cause.

Show Chairman’s Comments Feb 2023

CAR SHOWHeritage Park Show February 2023

As last year’s show chairman, helping Madam President, I want to recognize our new Vice President Dirk DeJong. He put on a 20 member car show for the Nestor Torres Heritage Park event. This included air conditioned bathrooms which I have never experienced at car show park setting.

We had members from the Miami region participating as well, a few Thunderbird Club members, a resto-mod Packard showed us that authentic classic looks can be updated with modern running gear and concealed air-conditioning.

For the younger set “bob the racer” and his wife, brought his early 60’s mustang with a 4 camshaft 4.6 cobra engine (400+ hp) stuffed into that itty bitty first generation engine compartment. His mastery fabrication and design just amaze’s me every time I see one of his hybrid creations. We also had a turbo Pontiac sunbird convertible, very rare relic and a joy for us Pontiac fanatics to witness being driven.

The “lifted” Chevy suburban with two tone sun bright orange paint was the visual stunner of the day, it’s so big it looked like there was orange everywhere on the show field. Our Vice President’s 41 Buick was the winner of the day. The 5 inch whitewalls, perfect leather, huge headlights and large chrome radiator were amazing. Personally I was awe struck by the inline 8 cylinder engine of bygone days which I only read about and we will never see again.

Ladies and gentlemen members, you need not drag out your “trailer queen” or your wood spoke wonder, just come on out look at what your club’s drivers cruised in with. We always have shade tent’s which allow us to socialize or come and look at your phone and tell your envious friends what a good time you’re having with a picture next to a classic car.

You can contribute to the club by sending possible car show ideas to your board members at fortlaudedale.aaca.com/officers/ We like ice cream stores, car friendly hamburger and hot dog venues and basically any place with adequate parking. We supply shade and often drinks and if you are lucky, cookies. So come on out, sit a spell and chat with friends and car lovers, we’d love to have you.

Your car friend,

Tim Nusbaum/mr2tim
